Presenter bio
Kim Deep, CMA, is a business coach, a financial educator, and the author of the children’s book, Conductor Kash and the Prosperity Express. Kim has been a featured columnist for numerous national publications and on radio and TV. Kim is currently in the process of publishing her 2nd children’s book, The Prosperity Princess. Kim is the founder and president of The Family Wealth Academy and Kidz Make Cents and Business By Numbers Ltd. She is known as the “CFO on the Go” and the Financial Waist Manager who empowers people with account-abilities.

Jennifer Cockrall King wins Dave Greber Freelance Writer Book Award

Congratulations to our board member, Jennifer Cockrall King for winning the Dave Greber Freelance Writer Book Award for her book Food and the City: Urban Agriculture and the New Food Revolution!

Her book will be published by Prometheus Books in February 2012.

Citizen Journalism — A Workshop for Writers

More than ever before, news organizations are eager to invite members of the public, sometimes known as “citizen journalists,” to participate in coverage of local events and issues. This presents an opportunity to be published. Journalism, however, involves a particular kind of information-gathering and storytelling. It’s not so much about “writing what you know” as it is “writing what you didn’t know until just now, after asking the questions.”
This practical workshop will explore the skills, style and ethics that a reporter would apply to a story, and it will demonstrate how citizen journalists can use those skills to write stories of interest to a wider audience. We will discuss story idea generation, interviewing techniques and story structure, and students will have an opportunity to practise those skills in class. We will look at what local media outlets are looking for from citizen journalists, including how to pitch, what to pitch, and to whom. We will discuss what’s in it for the writer who participates in such community newsgathering efforts.
The workshop includes a guided tour of the Edmonton Journal’s community media lab and newsroom, followed by an introduction to the virtual community newsroom by Barb Wilkinson, deputy editor, innovation and engagement.
Workshop Leader: Karen Unland is a journalism educator and consultant based in Edmonton. She spent 15 years working for major daily newspapers before heading out on her own. At the Edmonton Journal she was a report, an assistant city editor, an assignment editor, and finally, the editor of edmontonjournal.com. She now teaches reporting and news production at Grant MacEwan University. Through Unland Media Consulting, she helps newsrooms improve their skills and adjust their thinking to adapt to the changes going on in journalism in the 21st century.

At the Edge of Print, the Get Publishing society conference for writers, editors and publishers, drew about 150 people on May 6 and 7, including registrants, presenters and volunteers. It was a great time – stimulating speakers, terrific conversations and networking, good food. We’ll do it again in two years.
Here’s what Jennifer Cockrall-King writes about the Edge of Print conference: “What a great conference. I heard over and over again how much people enjoyed it. I met so many new and energizing people, too. My head is spinning.”

Small but mighty

Gaspereau Press caused a sensation late last year when a novel it published, The Sentimentalists, won the ScotiaBank Giller Prize. The small Nova Scotia publisher found itself with a huge demand for Johanna Skibdrud’s novel, and a publishing maelstrom ensued. We’re delighted that Andew Steeves of Gaspereau will be a keynote speaker at our conference in May, to talk about this publishing coup. Minister Faust speaks!

Minister Faust, aka Malcolm Azania, will be a featured speaker at our At the Edge of Print conference in May. Malcolm is an award-winning novelist and radio broadcaster whose debut novel, The Coyote Kings of the Space-Age Bachelor Pad, was shortlisted for three awards and placed on four top-10 lists for 2004. His second novel, From the Notebooks of Doctor Brain, won the Carl Brandon Society Kindred Award and was runner-up for the Philip K. Dick Award of 2007. He’s an amazing guy.
